St. Luke-the Physician is honored to share our hospitality with the Foothill Unity Center. There are a myriad of opportunities to reach out to our community through Foothill Unity, as the Center offers food, toiletries, shelter referrals, and health services as well as case management to East San Gabriel Valley residents in crisis.
St. Luke’s parishioners have donated thousands of school supplies, including backpacks, notebooks, pens, markers, and calculators to Foothill Unity Center’s annual “Back to School” events at Santa Anita Racetrack. Parishioners have also assisted with their Back to School efforts, helping to distribute “loaded” backpacks to over 1000 young students, ranging from kindergarteners to 12th graders, who also receive dental screenings, haircuts, and manicures. In addition, we participate in Foothill’s annual “Angel” project, collecting new gifts for parents to give their children at Christmas.
Foothill Unity Center advises us on their greatest needs each month, whether it is collecting pies for Thanksgiving, canned food, toiletries, clothing basics, diapers, or pet supplies.
Riverbed Ministry
Through our CARETEAM leadership, we also have volunteers who prepare and/or serve monthly lunches for distribution to the homeless at the encampments on our local river beds, in cooperation with other local churches and civic groups.
The St. Luke’s Leadership also currently engages in interfaith and interdenominational dialogue in Monrovia, and at our Cathedral Center in Echo Park, to discern the ways St. Luke’s can offer peace, service, and understanding, across religious “boundaries.”
We meet monthly and welcome all who feel called to be a part of this work.
